Light Rail to Woden will create a more connected, sustainable, and vibrant city.

This construction notification provides you with information on upcoming construction activity in the city work zone on raising London Circuit – an enabling project for light rail to Woden.

From 29 September 2022, preparation for main works on raising London Circuit will commence. This involves mobilisation of two construction site compounds within two city car parks. These site compounds will be used for the duration of the project for site offices and amenities, deliveries and storage of materials, and machinery and workforce parking.

A temporary closure of London Circuit between Edinburgh Avenue and Constitution Avenue will be required in the future to safely carry out main works to raise London Circuit. Ahead of main works, temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Northbourne Avenue and Vernon Circle to allow safe movements onto Constitution Avenue and London Circuit.

To ensure safety and to minimise impacts to the community, some of this work will take place at night. Continue reading for work hours and when night work will take place, together with a map of the work areas.

Upcoming work

  1. Set up of construction site compounds:

  • On Friday 30 September 2022, fencing will be installed around the site compound A area (see map on page 2) within the ACT Government surface City Hill car park (corner of Constitution Avenue and London Circuit). Some parking spaces will be blocked in the days leading up to this closure to allow work crews to safely install the site fencing. Oversized vehicles will deliver site offices and amenities sheds. Mobile cranes will be used to unload and lift the sheds into place. These deliveries will take place during off peak daytime hours.
  • From Wednesday 5 October 2022, fencing will be installed around site compound B area within the ACT Government surface car park at 41 Marcus Clarke Street. This will involve an increase in construction vehicle movements.
  1. Installation of temporary traffic lights at Vernon Circle:

  • From Wednesday 5 October 2022, work to install traffic lights and a bus lane on the northern side of Vernon Circle will start. This will involve utilities trenching and kerb and road works on the northern section of Vernon Circle which is expected to take up to 12 weeks. To facilitate this work intermittent lane closures and temporary road closures of Northbourne Avenue southbound and northbound will be in place during off peak times and at night. Cyclist access will be maintained throughout these works, however at times detours may be required. For your safety, please follow the direction of signage and traffic management.
  1. City Hill:

  • From Wednesday 5 October work will be carried out to extend the footpath on City Hill providing a link between Constitution Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue. This work will involve ground levelling and concreting activities including concrete truck deliveries. During off peak periods and at night, intermittent lane closures may be required. To safely carry out this work safety barriers will be in place to protect work crews and motorists.

Standard construction work hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and Saturdays between 7am and 1pm.
